THE MARKET SQUARE GETS NOMINATED FOR ARCHITECTURE AWARD

The Market Square

The Market Square gets nominated for architecture award. The Square is an arm of the Historical Market Theatre, located in Newtown across the road from its mother body, is now one of six unique projects that are shortlisted for the World Architecture News Performing Spaces Award 2017.

If you’re an arts enthusiast or a drama student, the Market Square is the quintessential place to get information on the latest productions that are showcased at the market theatre. It is also a campus for students at the Market Theatre Laboratory and the Market Photo Workshop.

The WAN Performing Spaces Award attracts entries from across the globe. It is created as a way to recognize and celebrate the best in international architecture for performing arts venues.

In order for an architectural project to be considered onto the list, it had to fulfil the requirements of the brief and meet the judging criteria. The project needs to be functional as a performance space that creates a sense of excitement and wonder, as well as have a special quality that would enable it to shine and distinguish itself amongst the plethora of architectural projects that are submitted for the award. It is clear upon marveling at the architecture of the Market Square, that it would be considered for such an award. It is undeniably a visual spectacle that ought to be admired.

The Market Square is not just a space for creatives to come together and share their collective interest and appreciation for the arts. It is a great example of the architectural beauty that could be found in South Africa, when architectural creativity and the arts are joined together.

The winner will be announced on the 28th of February 2018, at a prestigious WAN awards 2017 Event.

Congratulations to the Market Square for making the shortlist, I can only imagine the architectural capabilities that could spread across the country.
