We couldn’t count down 2017 without reflecting back on the moments
that we’ve spent with you: the actors. Let’s do away with the word ‘Interview’ and rather revisit the conversations that we’ve had together. The getting to know you part; the pinning you down to a date; the rescheduling; the walking on egg shells to not disturb the flow of production on set, getting around the red tape. The noes and the yes’. It has all proven to be worthwhile from our first feature with Pallance Dladla; who spoke fervently of acting, attributing his success to the women in his life; Jerry Mofokeng’s words ‘I am incurably and artist.’ Still resonate profoundly.
I can never forget the warm and jovial Nthati Moshesh and that moment she said:
“God directs my life.” The weight of sitting across Sello Maake ka-Ncube at the Elevate roof top with conversations spinning candidly from humor to solemn. With all that talk, I beg the question: how do we repurpose our sages for the benefit and betterment of the industry? They are old with wisdom yet youthful with the affection of their craft.
Knowing that Samkelo Ndlovu used to go people watching; Kagiso Modupe has two degrees that have nothing to do with acting and Thuso Mbedu was house hopping between friends while in desperate need of her big break.
Behind the scenes there are human beings whose work is to embody other people’s lives
and Actor Spaces, founded by Ayanda Sithebe is a platform designed for you: the actor. These are your stories and thank you for allowing us in.
To Mooi Street Moves, Momo Matsunyane and Tony Miyambo of ‘The Cenotaph Of Dan Wa Moriri’, thank you for reminding us that theatre still has a pulse.
In the New Year we aim to find the balance in sharing more stories across Theatre, Film and Television. To the actors we haven’t featured yet, we look forward to crawling into your hearts.
Our gratitude towards the Market Theatre for hosting our first meet and greet event, is insatiable. We shook hands over Martell tastings and sealed the night with ‘Craig Morris in Johnny Boskak is feeling funny’. We’ve been on the ground for less than a year yet your support has proven to be invaluable.
To the team: Ayanda Sithebe, Marcus Desando, Sdumo Mtshali, Pallance Dladla, Mlungisi Mlungwana (MluArt) and Thalami Zimu when i was assigned the responsibility of being an editor, no one mentioned that I had inherited a family of visionaries. Thank you for the work you have put in, a toast to 2016.
