AFRIKAANS PRODUCTION OPENS AT THE MARKET THEATRE, “JOANIE GALANT – HULLE”

The Market Theatre produces another mega hit written by critically acclaimed writer Adam Small Joanie Galant – Hulle, directed by Christo Davids starring an impeccable ensemble filled with star power Kim Cloete, Brendon Daniels and Wayne Van Rooyen will make its Johannesburg premier from 24 February – 27 March 2022.

Joanie Galant – Hulle is a reflection story that takes us back to the forced removals that occurred in District Six and Woodstock during the Apartheid era. The legacy of apartheid and forced removals left Cape Town as a segregated city, and residential suburbs created by apartheid through forced removals are still visible. However it is seldom we hear about those stories.

A family was forced out from their home in Woodstock, they had to move to the Cape Flats. This story gives a familiar feel to man: not only is it a reminder of our history, but it goes to ask the question, WHERE ARE WE REALLY AT HOME IN THIS LIFE?

Adam Small used his writings as a tool to bring attention to the oppression experienced by the working class at the hands of the apartheid regime, especially speaking up against the Group Areas Act and Population. The Afrikaans play explores the harsh emotions involved when humans are dispossessed.

The land dispossession of the indigenous people of South Africa under this Act is still prevalent in our country today. Many South Africans are trapped in a cycle of poverty that emerged as a result of our history of colonialism and apartheid.

Joanie Galant – Hulle is part of the Market Theatre’s continued commitment to diversifying programme offering in staging works in indigenous languages and by South African playwrights.

Directed by Christo Davids a South African filmmaker and actor. He is best known for the roles in the films, Forgiveness, Ernest in the Army and A Boy Called Twist. Christo returns to the Market to direct this emotional thriller with some of South Africa finest actors Kim Cloete, Brendon Daniels and Wayne van Rooyen.

Joanie Galant – Hulle is sponsored by the Department of Sports Arts and Culture’s Incubation programme.
