This week’s Actor of the Week goes to the Award winning Actor, Thabo Rametsi for his role as Calvin Khumalo on the Netflix film, Silverton Siege.

Thabo Andrew Rametsi II, popularly known as Thabo Rametsi, is a South African actor and producer. He is best known for his role in the popular serials The Giver, The Gamechangers and Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu

Silverton Siege is set in 1980, Pretoria during the Apartheid era. The film is inspired by the real-life incident that sparked the global “Free Mandela’ movement.

Rametsi portrays Clavin Khumalo, ⅓ of the Silverton Siege trio – three young freedom fighters with nothing left to lose. Following a high-speed car chase with the police after a thwarted sabotage mission, the trio ends up seeking refuge in a South African bank in Silverton, Pretoria. Taking the bank and its customers hostage, and demanding the release of Nelson Mandela in exchange for the release of the prisoners, the stakes and tensions run high.

In this scene, Calvin Khumalo is sitting down on the restroom floor portraying feeling exhausted and defeated. The events that transpired were not part of the plan. While Calvin is sitting on the floor, we see Christine, played by Elani Dekker, walk in and kneel down towards Calvin. She asks Calvin how can she be of assistance and Calvin tells her to go do whatever it is that she wants. She then confesses to Calvin about who she is and who her father is. She tells Calvin that she bore witness to her father taking another man’s life all because he was black. This instantly triggers Calvin. Calvin starts lashing out to Christine.

In this moment, we saw Calvin’s sadness turn into rage. This was all inspired by his words, “So what?” He made his words affect him which led to an authentic performance. Rametsi uses body posture and tears to communicate Calvin’s defeat. He is always in a crouched position and lets his tears flow without wiping them off. In this, the character is at a breaking point with no reason to dust himself off, leading to Rametsi playing this scene on a status 2. Thabo surrendered to this moment, he gave in to the character and showed us what it means to be in the moment. He did his research and found exactly what the motive was.

The performance by Thabo Rametsi in Silverton Siege was honestly breathtaking, we truly see the definite meaning behind the phrase “An Actor prepares”.

Three cheers to you Thabo.
