Nomawonga Khumalo is a name to look out for in the South African screen landscape.
In her directorial debut, she has sensitively crafted nine minutes and twenty seconds of poetry-in-motion, that is as tragic as it is gorgeous. This is done by the merging of world-class cinematography (Rick Joaquim, SASC) with a distinctly South African narrative resulting in a short film that feels both strange and familiar.
A strangeness that comes from the ambiguity of the setting and in how the characters barely say much, out loud. A familiarity in the ways that poverty in contemporary South Africa disempowers and dehumanizes black women. A reality for far too many in this country, who like Fiona (Ayanda Seoka), find themselves compromising the most intimate parts of themselves for the survival of their families.
