Ama Qamata, a South African global sensation who has taken the world by storm with her lead role as Puleng on the Netflix Original Blood & Water, she is also a local favourite as Buhle from Mzansi Magic’s hit crime series Gomora. At the age of 3 Ama moved to Johannesburg, from Cala, a small town in the Eastern Cape. She went on to study Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town. We took some time to link up with Ama over a virtual coffee break to check in with her.

Considering the restrictions of Covid, does the pandemic bring fear to your unfolding journey as an actress?

The pandemic brings fear in general, I think just the uncertainty of what the future holds can be quite scary but I try not to focus too much on that. For the industry, it has already been quite an adjustment, we are very restricted in what we can shoot but I guess we will have to get used to this until there are fewer restrictions.

Blood & Water is renewed for season 2, how are you feeling about this?

I am beyond excited for season 2. Thank you to everybody that supported the show, shoutout to you guys!!!

How can an aspiring actor prepare themselves for this field of work?

Nothing can really prepare you for being in this industry but experience. I would suggest maybe doing an internship or shadowing someone in the industry, also attending some acting workshops can be helpful they’re also really fun.

What is the one thing you wish someone told you coming into the industry?

That it is not glamours at all, lol. It’s a lot of hard work and waking up at unimaginable hours in the morning but I genuinely love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work.

What is next for Ama? What can we expect from you in the near future?

I am definitely looking forward to more opportunities to represent the continent further in terms of the creative arts and not forgetting my passion for giving back, uplifting and inspiring young girls through my craft.
